Nonprofit Managers: Is Marketing Equal to Fundraising?

For most nonprofit managers, marketing is equivalent to fundraising. A business exists for more than mere profit. By using the proper social media tools, you can increase the effectiveness of programs that will make people see how you truly want to make a difference in the world.

Social marketing uses some of the tools that can change everyone’s perception of a product or service. It’s not easy to convince people to patronize what you do or say – that’s just impossible. Since nonprofit organization don’t have enough money to cover promotional expenses, they resort to the good old traditional ways of marketing, like talking to each and every person that they see. Even though that kind of approach is still effective today, there’s a new way of connecting people – through the use of Twitter or Facebook.

The Internet is known to have reach millions of people from all around the planet. With its power to influence people in an instant, it makes “touching lives” much easier. Nonprofit organizations such as Amnesty International use social media sites to get feedback from individuals. For example, when a group of people claimed to have experienced “cheating” from a couple of FX brokers, Amnesty turned to Twitter to voice out its disgust.

For more than 100 years, the world has debated issues, like HIV/AIDS and cancer. Other nonprofit organizations, like the UN, have enlisted the help of corporations from Europe, Asia and America in order to find temporary and permanent solutions to these problems. With the use of commercial marketing techniques, the UN was able to generate funds for victims. It’s amazing to see how social media was used by for a good purpose that benefitted millions of lives.

There have been arguments of using social media as a tool of marketing in order to raise funds. Some people think that it’s not ethical to use techniques that are used by businesses. However, there are individuals who think that it’s okay to use it because it’s needed. The essence of social media is, indeed, evident these days. Now that it has venture into helping nonprofit organizations, people can see that it’s not just for business anymore.
